Reduce Turnover: Recognizing the Signs of a Dissatisfied Employee

Empower Employees By Recognizing Their Strengths!

Employees frequently "check out" long before they give notice. Understanding how people think and feel is essential so you can address their concerns well before they start looking for a new job. When someone grows dissatisfied with their job, it can have a negative impact, even if they are diligent professionals who do their best to prevent their feelings from affecting their work.

Employees can become dissatisfied with their job or company, leading to poor performance, low productivity, and excessive turnover. Their dissatisfaction can harm their coworkers' morale-particularly in a well-respected colleague's case. As a manager, it's essential to be alert to the signs of a dissatisfied employee and take action to address the underlying issues.

Watch for Signs Like These

High Turnover: If you notice an increase in turnover, it may be time to evaluate your workplace culture. Note when employee attrition began to rise and what changes may have occurred around the same time.

Decreased Productivity: Even if an employee is still doing high-quality work, if they are less productive than normal - pay attention.

Negative Attitude: Watch for increasing complaints, hostility or apathy in employees. Keep in mind you are looking for a change over time. If someone has been a complainer from day one, that might just be their personality. But, a previously enthusiastic employee who's suddenly disengaged may be heading out the door.

Increased Absenteeism: If you notice a sudden increase in the amount of sick, personal, or vacation time an employee takes. If you regularly engage with your team, you'll know if they have childcare difficulties or a sick parent.

Lack of Initiative: Everyone knows which employees are always eager to volunteer for special projects or take on new challenges. If one of them loses their enthusiasm or stops sharing ideas or making suggestions, they may be growing dissatisfied with their job.

Don't ignore these signs, hoping any issues will blow over. Talk to them to learn the cause. Was there a recent management change? A sudden increase in workload? "Temporary" overtime that goes on for months at a time? They may even be experiencing a personal issue that has nothing to do with work. You might still be able to help by offering a sympathetic ear or time off.
